What to keep, What to leave behind the Million Dollar question
When you finally decide that you need to move, you need to think about how to save volume of your move. As we advise in this site its all about the volume (c/f, lb, CBM) bottom line you will charges based on the volume of your shipment it does not matter if its a long distance move or an international one, the shipping companies or the long distance companies are charging based on the volume of your shipment.
This is where the deciding what to keep and what to leave behind is a crucial, yet bittersweet, job. In today’s buyers’ market, leaving behind a prized possession. Likewise, arguing to keep the item may add to your volume. When it comes down to it, what is the solution and how can I defy what's more important by keeping your beloved belonging? or to let them go?
Household items that could stay or go it all depends on how important is it? and do you really need it? Will you be able to buy another Household goods item for the same price? will it fit your new home? is it worth it? and a allot of many questions, but you will need to make the final decision. Before your moving date , take the time to consider what items have significant value to you. Will you take or leave behind light fixtures, drapes and curtains, blinds, furnishings, shelving units, washer/dryer sets, kitchen appliances and plants, tools, bicycles, gym equipment, old weights, books, toys?
For example if you have large items that can dismantle take them apart, it will save the volume, (not all movers disassemble all items, or there will be an additional charge for the service) With smaller items, store them away if its a local move. or put them in boxes name the boxes so you will remember to check these boxes again. As you may know after the move take place these boxes will go to the attic and you will not see them for a few more years.
If your not moving to far, rent a storage room keep all your items you cant let go in the storage room, today storage rooms are very cheap and locating a storage near you will be very easy. (see storage section) don't forget about them! If you don't use them with a year or so you might not need them any more.
Sometimes you just got to let go, throw the things you don't need, things that pile up, we are all buyers, we all like to buy things at great sales even if we never use them. We would suggest to make a Garage Sale, where you can make some $$$ on the items you never used. or sale your goods on Craigslist or EBay.
If you have already chosen a new home, consider the layout, theme and design of this home. If you’re downsizing, will there be room for the item? If you’re upsizing, is it worth potentially losing a buyer’s offer? Does your new home already come equipped with blinds, light fixtures or a washer/dryer set?
Deeply consider if it’s worth the hassle of transporting this item to a new home! When you sale your Household Goods or just things you have around the house and you never used them or you have or once or twice it will give you some pleasure knowing you got something for it, other wise throwing it just like this you might never do.
Things to Take
Furniture, Appliances (not for international) and all other Household items, we always advise our customers take it if you need it. taking furniture and Household items can save the headache of looking for a new leaving room that will match the paint on the wall... etc.
When moving you need to think of your expanses therefore if you planning on buying all new furniture on your new location then don't take the one you own now. But if your planning on saving take the furniture you need. We also advise checking if the furniture your taking with you will fit into your new house. for example moving from the US to Austria, Belgium, Romania, or other locations houses are smaller and rooms are smaller, buildings, doors, elevators are narrow. 60% of international moves to Europe the shipping companies require using a crain, shuttle services on delivering the shipment into the home.
For Appliances - Make sure the voltage is the same (check our moving with appliances page) otherwise you will require a converter or the items will not work. If buying a new leaving room, dinning room, beds, etc. at your destination is more expansive from the one you own, take it with you save money. some extra charges on a crain will not make the difference of buying something new And the list can go on.
Our advise is to check what you have, review the items you need, make sure not to take the things you don't need, not to pay for extra volume on your shipment. We all experience a profound attachment to a certain possession. When it comes down to keeping or leaving it behind, the quickest way to decide is to ask yourself, how much will you miss the item a year from now?
