My Moving Guide would like to breakdown the DIY packing tips and what will be the best and secure way to pack your goods on a DIY move.

As packing is a kind of Art in the most reliable moving companies, who invest with the best quality of packing materials, the privet consumer cannot afford buying such materials on a DIY move. therefore we at My Moving Guide will address the best way of packing your personal goods on a DIY move.

  

Clothing:

• Clothes on hangers are best to pack in a box called wardrobe (closet carton) this box will protect clothing from wrinkles. this box is good to be used for suites, fur coats, dresses, etc.

• Never move cloths in garment bags, garment bags are not strong enough for the moving process, and may damage.

• In most moving companies clothing in chest of drawers, or closets are not recommended as they add weight to the furniture and can cause damages on transit. on a DIY move if the furniture
  is not to heavy for lifting then you can store light clothing in the drawers.


Pictures & Mirrors:

• Moving companies will pack normal sized pictures in a picture box, on a DIY move you can purchase boxes on-line or at staples, home dept, etc.
 protect your picture/ mirror with some bubble or blanket and then put in s box.

• If you don't have special picture boxes you can use the following instruction to create one: Open the bottom of the carton, then flatten it out. Seal one of the open sides with tape. Lay the picture of mirror face down on several sheets of packing paper, then fold over the edges of the paper and seal them with tape. Slide the picture or mirror into the unsealed side of your carton and seal the carton's end with tape.


Appliances:

• Wrap small appliances with plenty with foam and padding, make sure appliances that require to be on a vertical level of horizontal, make sure you pack them in the position they require to be
  
otherwise it could be messy.
• Appliances that contain oil, secure them with a plastic wrap and sealed in order to avoid messy & oily items in the box.
• Make sure to purchase convertors for all appliances that work on 110v only. remember that European & other countries contain a higher voltage then the USA,
  this will protect your appliances from burning out.

 

Beds:

• Make sure to dismantle the beds, and frames, keep all screws and hardware attached to the frame, (roll them is tape and attaché them onto the bed frame.
• Make sure to have a sign or a numbers on frames in order to remember how to reassemble the frame.
• Mattresses and Box Springs are to be wrapped with moving blankets, or soft carton wrapped with nylon or shrink wrap.
• High-Risers make sure to secure the frame and tie. this will prevent damages if the bed with rise.

 

Books:

• All books are packed in small book boxes, your filing boxes, you can find them in any store like Staples, Home Depot.
• If the books does not fit the box, you can put one box on another in order to secure the protection of the books. Do not have books in large size box,
 
otherwise it will be hard to carry and can cause damage on transit


Lamp Shads:

• Whenever possible, pack lamp shades two or three to a box.
• Use plain, white wrapping paper/ or soft linen (not newspaper) as a protective lining between each shade.
• Don't pack anything else with lampshades. 

 Write FRAGILE on the sides of the carton

Dishes:

• Line the bottom of a dish pack with several layers of wrapping paper for extra cushioning in the China Box (Dish Box).
• Place one plate in the centre of the sheets of paper and pull a 1 or 2 sheets over it.
• Stack the next plate on top and pull another sheets of paper over to cover the stacked plates, do not stack more the 3 - 4 small plates and 2-3 large plates on a stack
• Make sure to have all heavy plates and dishes on the bottom of the carton and go up with the light items in the kitchen such as cups, and serving dishes.
• place one glass cup/ china/ mug/ etc. on a sheet roll it and add another roll and add another, add just about 3-4 cups per sheet. if the glasses are FRAGILE,
  add 1 or 2 per sheet of (news print - packing materials for breakables)
• Make sure not to stack the China Box to heavy, it might fall or slip and cause other damages.
• Leave some space on the top of the box in order to provide cushioning for the items on top of the box.
