Terminology of services page is for our customers to know when they ask for a quote they know what to ask for. Most of consumers have no idea in terminology of moving or shipping. We believe that this would provide consumers when they speak to a moving/ shipping rep. they will understand the terminology and the differences of sizes on there shipment. For example:
For Domestic Moving:
For international relocation:
The term is FCL – Full Container Load
- 1x40’ – outside measurements – 40’ L x 8’ W x 8’.6” H
Net container volume if you fill in water to get full capacity, in the international relocation we use boxes, furniture etc. all these take space and most likely not on even terms, therefore the shipping industry is providing the containers for 20’ = 1000 c/f & 40’ = 2000 c/f taking into considerations that the volume is not used to it’s max cause of packing, loading, and differences of sizes.
If your moving a 1x bedroom apartment most likely your shipment will be estimated by volume or 1x20’ container. Ask your company to provide you with on-site surveys that can determent the volume of your move. Most reliable companies will be able to provide you with the following services (FREE of charge). Or you can send a list of items to your Rep. (pls. make sure that the list will include all your planning to take + extra boxes to be safe on volume size). Then your Rep. should be able to advise you the best way to ship your goods is.
LCL shipment are measured by volume LCL stands for Lose Container LoadIn the shipping industry LCL shipments are done by several ways, none professional and the professional.
The none Professional companies will mark your name on each box, with your file #, with the city of destination, take all goods to a freight forwarder who will load your shipment on a steel container divided with cardboard between the names on a consolidation and ship it over seas. At the port of destination the boxes will off load and the selected agent will require to pick up the lose boxes and deliver them to the final destination and listed on the bill of lading.
A Professional company will pick up your goods and provide you with a detailed inventory that will be under one color or serial #, the shipment will be packed on skids such as shrink wrap, palettes, and the better ones will have your shipment packed in wooden lift-vans. These export packing is called LCL, the goods will be loaded on a steel container at there warehouses and be exported under there supervision to your final destination. The most common size of an LCL is 84’ x 49” x 84’ = 200 c/f (standard 200 c/f – outside measurements) when you choose a professional company they will pack your shipment based on the volume of your goods one on one and will not use only there standard lift-vans. Other then the standard size professional companies built custom made boxes according to your shipment volume. (check our image gallery for images of LCL, Shrink Wrap shipments).
If the move is higher the 150 miles in most case the minimum volume will be 300 c/f.
The rate of services is based on the volume of your shipment, therefore try not to go low when you provide the representative with your moving info. In most cases people try to reduce there volume while they are providing falls information to the companies in contact, then after pick up instead of 5 boxes the our come is 25 boxes of Personal Effects & Hose Hold Goods.
As experts in the business it’s known the consumers are not aware of the items in there houses. When an estimator shows up and provides them with 50 – 80 boxes of p/e consumers get the filling that there is a scam, the idea of an estimator to visit your home is to give you an estimate of the volume of your shipment. In most cases consumers are not aware of there goods and the volume they might have in there own home. The outcome is that the consumer is paying by volume, after the pick up they find them self paying a lot more then they were ready for. The idea is that if you have a little higher estimate that you anticipate which its better then having a low ball estimate with low volume etc.
Therefore it’s the consumer respocebillty to follow the movers not to pack empty boxes so the volume will not rise to extreme volume. There are lots of tricks and gimmicks’ and here in My Moving Guide we will provide you with all the information you need to know. Check out the moving tips you will find a lot of information how to pack and keep your volume down.
