Malaysia Customs info
Customer must be in the country at time of customs clearance to sign documents. All shipments subject to 100% Customs examination. Used household goods duty-free if:- Customer has owned goods for a minimum of three months and will not dispose of them for at least six months. Customer is a foreigner holding a Work Permit or Customer is a Malaysian who has been out of the country for a continuous period over one year. Used Personal Effects Definition - Personal Effects is defined as own household and personal items proven and identifiable as being purchased at least 3 months or having being used six months prior to date of import. Any items in the shipment which look new must be accompanied with purchase receipts as proof for customs upon arrival. Any personal effects identified as new (less than 6 months old) will attract import duties. The shipper must be in country prior to arrival of shipment to sign necessary documents such as approved permits for cars, National Electricity Board Permit for electrical appliances & other clearance documents required. Used Personal & Household Effects brought into Malaysia, exempted from duties exempted by (a) foreigners who have valid Malaysian work permit / employment letter by Malaysian employer (b) Returning Malaysians who have been out of country for a continuous period in excess of 3 months.
Documents required for personal effects 1. Copy of passport. 2. Packing list. 3. BL / AWB Consigning the goods to the customer. 4. Client’s contact details 5. Authorization Letter to the destination agent to clear the goods on customer’s behalf.
Dutiable/ Restricted Items
All electrical items require Import Permit All items less than six months old are taxed and dutiable (original invoices with value are required) Video cassettes and films Subject to review by the Film Censorship Board Additional charges are for the customer's account Precious metal objects Plants require Phytosanitary Certificate and approval from the Ministry of Agriculture Computers are tax free, limited to no more than three imported per family, cannot be sold With in one year of import, and require an Import License Alcohol and cigarettes are subject to high import duties.
Vehicle/ Car Import highly discouraged. All motor vehicles (new or used) are subject to Customs duties, are highly taxed and require an Import Permit. The permit must be granted before the vehicle is shipped. Motor vehicles over five years old are prohibited.
Documents required 1. Original membership certificate 2. Customs Form No. 1 (eight copies) 3. Insurance Policy 4. Original and copy of passport of member 5. Letter from member stating reason to import vehicles 6. Invoice, if vehicle is new.
Prohibited Items
Firearms, dangerous weapons, fireworks, explosives, ammunition and knives. Narcotics and drugs (violators subject to Death Penalty). Foodstuffs. Pornographic or politically sensitive material (in the form of books, videos, films, etc.). Gold bullion. Telephone and fax equipment (permit required). Short wave radios. Satellite dish. Nothing from Israel is allowed into Malaysia. Any literature on communism is prohibited.
Antiques Clearance documents required are: Malaysian Customs Form 1, Letter of Authorisation, Origin Invoice, Certificate of Antiquity from Origin Country to indicate if antique is over 100 years and to be approved by Museum Authority prior to importation. Plants Clearance documents required are: Phytosanitory Certificate issued by origin country, Letter of Authorization, Invoice, Malaysian Custom Form 1 & Import Permit. Mandatory quarantine period of 3 days. (see bellow more info) Diplomatic Shipments Diplomatic shipment needs to be approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which may take 2 to 3 weeks. Original shipping documents are to be submitted by the shipper's Embassy with his/her Diplomatic ID CARD (issued upon arrival). Note: Customs regulations are subject to change at any time.
